On 2nd April 2006, the Toowoomba Caledonian Society conducted its second "Tartan Day" at Queens Park, Toowoomba.

This year's event expanded upon the highly successful event conducted last year to involve 34 display stalls, 6 pipe bands and an outstanding array of entertainment including highland, Celtic and country dancing. Highland Games including cader tossing, rock put, hammer throw and farmer's wall were demonstrated by Cameron Collins with a special guest appearance by local heavy weight boxing identity, Owen "Baked Bean" Paroz.

{moszoomthumb imgid=1 style_m=2} Jack Vaudin,  the Society's Honorary Secretary, took charge of the Society's stand at International Tartan Day celebrated at Southbank on Sunday 2 July 2006. Jack was assisted by David Bolton, who was there at the start and had to leave mid-morning, and Don Galloway who was there from about 11am to the finish. Jack was able to stay all day. International Tartan Day is organised by the Australian Scottish Community Inc. The Society Banner and Flag were on display, along with supplies of the Society newsletter, 'Albannaich Queensland', applications for membership, and an information sheet 'About the Society'. Several people professed interest in joining and took away the application and information sheet.

{moszoomthumb imgid=2} Jack says, "I had six attractive tea towels (Scottish) on display and a lot of people wanted to buy them as they were 'a lot better than the other ones here today".  Two people went to the nearest ATM to get more money to buy all six. All in all our stand at International Tartan Day did quite well."

The 11th Fred Logan New Year's Day gathering was held at Petrie Park, Nambour, by the Sunshine Coast Branch of the Society of St Andrew of Scotland (Queensland) Limited, and what a wonderful day it was! We say every year it gets better and this year certainly kept up the tradition.

The weather was brilliant sunshine with a light sea breeze all day. Spectators were an enthusiastic audience, especially for the pipe bands and dancers who excelled themselves on a warm summer's day. The programme also included songs beautifully rendered by our guest, vocalist Warwick Jackes from Brisbane, as well as delightful Cletic interludes from both "Keltish and Tapestry Duo".

The non-stop programme put our Scottish tradtions and heritage on display in excellent style. Local Mayor, Joe Natoli, officially opened the event and supported the underpinning idea of the event of bringing families together on the first day of the year to keep them united for the year ahead, whatever that may hold.

On behalf of the Mayor, Cr. Paul Tatton presented the perpetual shield for the most entertaining band on the day to "Clan Stuart", but of course it is an exceptionally hard choice given the great presentations from all the bands.

For those who tried to guess the weight of "Sunny" the Clydesdale, he weighed in at 700kg!
